Seratonin
Like the above, this is another natural substance proven to help with sleep. Go Ask Alice is a feature of Columbia University, where people from across the world can ask a variety of questions. In this reply, the benefits and negatives to serotonin are given, along with which foods to find them in. They also discuss serotonin as a mood stabilizer.

Carbs
Atkins may help you lose weight, but it won’t help you sleep. In fact, foods rich in carbohydrates compliment the dairy foods containing tryptophan in ways to help yourself fall asleep. Ideal bedtime snacks include whole grain cereal and milk, bread and cheese, or some of other form of high fiber, low sugar combination. The best time to eat carbs according to this CBS article is four hours before bed time.

This super drink has been known to help even those with sleep apnea, a common disorder, fall asleep. This article reports on a study published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” that shows how a protein naturally found in milk may improve sleep quality and next day alertness.

They’re two of the most dangerous diseases that still plague developing countries where the population is high, sanitary conditions are lax, and health departments are struggling to cope with one tropical disease after the other. Both dengue and malaria are caused by mosquitoes, those pesky flying needles that cause more trouble than their size would indicate. They’re both transferred when the mosquito carrying infected blood bites someone, and they’re both viral infections that could cause serious complications if left untreated – dengue can cause hemorrhagic fever while malaria can lead to kidney complications and metabolic acidosis.

But besides the fact that they are often confused for the other and that dengue is often diagnosed as malaria, there are basic differences in both the diseases:

Dengue is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito while malaria is transferred from person to person by the female Anopheles mosquito.

Dengue-causing mosquitoes bite people during the day while those that cause malaria bite during the night.

Dengue mosquitoes live in urban surroundings while the malarial parasites prefer the rural milieu.

The dengue mosquito thrives on clear water while the malarial mosquito prefers dirty and swampy water. So it’s essential to ensure that you keep water stores covered and also prevent garbage (that could become a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes) from accumulating around your home.

Most importantly, although both diseases cause fever, joint pain and nausea, dengue victims are infected by a rash while malarial victims experience cycles of chills and high fever every few hours.

Although there is no vaccine to protect against dengue and malaria, travelers to countries where these diseases are rampant are advised to carry mosquito repellents, wear long-sleeved shirts and full trousers, and sleep in rooms where the windows are covered with adequate netting to keep out the mosquitoes. Besides this, there are certain medications that work for a certain period of time on a preventative basis, so consult your doctor before you travel abroad to countries where malaria and dengue are prevalent – Central America and Mexico, South Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.

It’s something that’s horribly ironic but true – more people are killed or made more ill because they’ve been given the wrong medication or the wrong dosage than because of disease. The reason for this is sheer carelessness, on the part of the patient and/or the pharmacist. Medicine is meant to cure, but when we’re negligent, it causes severity of symptoms and even death at times. When you’re ill, it’s not only important to get yourself checked and treated, it’s even more important that you ensure that you’re given the right medication. The only way to do this is to:

Ensure that your doctor knows your medical history: The first thing you need to do to ensure that you don’t fall victim to medication errors is to verify if your doctor is aware of your medical history. He or she should know if you’re allergic to certain medication and be aware of what medication you’re taking at present so that they can avoid prescribing overdoses or medicines that create adverse reactions with the ones you are already on. When you fail to tell your doctor important facts or if your doctor is negligent, your health, and even your life, is at stake.

Check the name on the prescription: When you get your prescription filled out, look at the name on the sheet and the medicines that have been given to you and ensure that it is your prescription and not the result of a mix-up.

Check your prescription against the medicines: Check the medicines to see if the brand names and dosage match that on your prescription. If your pharmacist offers you generic equivalents, check with your doctor first before replacing the medicines he/she has prescribed for you. It is dangerous to substitute drugs unless you’re very sure that they are the same as those that have been prescribed for you. Also check the bottles and packs for expiry dates and other information to ensure that they are fresh.

Ensure that you take your medication as directed: It’s not enough to just seek treatment when you’re ill or affected by disease, you also have to take the medication you’ve been prescribed at the right time, in the right dosage, and in the right way (as a pill or a concoction). Some people continue to medicate themselves even after their doctor says there’s no need to continue while some others stop taking their medication before they’re done with the course. If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics, you must finish the entire course even though you may feel better. Also ensure that you follow warnings on the label – some medicines cause drowsiness so you need to avoid driving and doing other things that require concentration after you’ve taken them. When you follow instructions carefully, you avoid medication errors.

Store and use medication safely at home: If more than one family member is on medication, store the drugs in separate locations so that they don’t get mixed up inadvertently. Also, keep them out of the reach of children and ensure that they’re used responsibly (taken only by those who are prescribed them).

Kids are playing more video games than ever before. Whether it’s on a pricey game console or on the computer, kids as young as three years old are playing video games. Sure, some may have educational lessons, but the vast majority are for mere fun and suck away the hours on a summer day. Get your kid outside and moving with these tips to get them away from video games.

Go for a nature walk. Kids seldom know much about nature, outside of the basics they learn in science class. Take your kids to explore the outdoors by taking them on a nature walk. Don’t worry if there’s no national park nearby, you can go down a trail at your local park or in the neighborhood and spot bits of nature as they turn up. Check out birds and collect neat leaves and flowers along the way. It teaches kids to appreciate and respect nature and gets them in tune with the great outdoors.

Share old school games with your kids. Today’s typical six year old may not know what Red Rover is. It’s too bad since the game is a blast! Share old school games with your kids that will make them want to get outside and start Red Rover games with their friends and neighbors. This is a great game to play at a kid’s birthday party too, since there are usually plenty of kids around.

Hit the beach. Appreciating nature comes with seeing the many parts of it. Showing your kids the beach will expose them to the sun and sand and you can incorporate a few lessons on erosion if the crowd is interested. Of course, if your kids are swimming the day away in the water, that’s fine too. Collect seashells and walk along the shore spotting crabs along the way.

Go to the park. This one seems basic, but once upon a time, the park was where most families spent their weekends. Now we tend to spend the weekends running errands or at the modern day park, the mall (insert shudder here). Take your kids to the park and let them do what they want. This is a great place to let them run wild because it gives them an opportunity to interact with other kids and play on things they may not have a chance to play with otherwise, like the jungle gym or see-saw.

Visit a public pool. If your kids don’t regularly get an opportunity to swim, taking them to a public pool one or two weekends a month during the summer will shake up their outdoor routine. Playing in the background can grow tedious, even for the creative bunch who love the outdoors, so get your kids in the pool swimming. Most public pools are free, so pack a lunch and go early and stay late.

Go camping. This one is a little tricky because depending on where you live and whether or not you own a vehicle, it becomes more or less accessible. If you can go camping with your kids, take them! You’ll appreciate seeing them in new territory (and vice-versa) and it makes for a great bonding experience. Don’t forget to pack the camera, so you can take photos of the family fishing or swimming in the lake.

Play baseball. Gather up a few kids from around the neighborhood (or invite school friends or cousins) and set up a game of baseball at a local diamond. It’s fun, cheap and many kids will want to play again and again. This one isn’t exclusively for kids either. Teams can be comprised of both adults and kids for a fun dynamic.

Start a garden. This is one surefire way to get kids outside, day after day. Starting a small garden will teach kids responsibility and how to get friendly with nature. Your kids will watch their plant or fruit or vegetable grow and appreciate the process and hands-on activity that requires time in the sun, almost daily.

Go for a hike. It’s similar to a nature walk, but instead of spotting things along the way, you’re more just enjoying the scenery as a whole. Kids can get some fresh air and take a look at what the outdoors, besides their backyard, look like. Hiking is an affordable trip if you live near a park with sizeable trails and small hills that kids can climb to the top of to appreciate the view.

Play catch. No park or major yard is required! Find an empty parking lot and play catch for hours with your kid or a group of kids. Baseball gloves for kids are usually affordable at sporting good stores and can be had for even less during the off-season. Plus, the glove will come in handy when you set up that game of baseball.

Take photos of your neighborhood. You’ll be surprised at how careful a kid is when trusted with a digital camera. We aren’t saying to hand over your $600 DSLR, but letting your kid toy with an affordable digital camera will make them see their neighborhood in a new light. It’s a great way to teach them about shadows, lighting and proportion. Hand the camera over and let them take photos. Then head home, upload them and pick out the memorable places you’re accustomed to seeing daily.

Watch the clouds. This is a free, simple activity that younger kids will enjoy. On a warm day, head outside with a few snacks and watch the clouds dance by. Point out funny shapes that remind you of things and watch how the sun changes as the clouds make their way. In this setting, kids will usually organically start playing games of tag and running around, so be prepared to stay outside awhile

Go stargazing. This can be at a park or in your own backyard. Set out a blanket and gaze away on a starry night. Use a constellation book to guide you through the stars you’re seeing or download Google Sky for a tour of the sky from your very own backyard. It’s a free activity that will open your kids to the world of astronomy and make them look up at night in a while new way.

Shoot some hoops. Even young kids will enjoy yelling, “Brick!” as their parents attempt to make a basket. This is a fun way for any number of friends or family to get outside and start playing and working up a sweat. Plus, as long as you can see your kids, it’s a game they can go at alone without worrying about anyone getting hurt.

Go bird watching. To do this, you can spot birds at random or take along a book to see if you see any of the birds on your journey. This works best if you’re in a park or wooded area where birds tend to gather. Bird watching is a fun family activity that many children take to because it gives them a closer look at nature than checking out plants and flowers.

Video games are tons of fun, but for youngsters, playing time should be limited to a couple of hours a week. If you show your child some fun ideas for getting outside and playing, they’ll be more apt to put down the video game controller and have some fun in the sun.

Gone are the days when technology was meant only for geeks and nerds. Today, if you don’t keep up with technology, you’re behind the times. It has pervaded every aspect of our world and made itself an integral part of our lives, one which we cannot do without. Imagine a world without the Internet, mobile phones, WiFi, and GPS – it did exist a few decades ago, but we’re so accustomed to the conveniences that technology offers that we cannot even consider doing without.

Doctors too have been sucked into the fray with the smartphone makers targeting them as high-end users. They’ve been convinced to get rid of their almost obsolete pagers and invest in the innovative phones that do just about everything a computer can, in a smaller and more convenient package, of course. The upside of this is that doctors have technology at their fingertips to help them in the course of their work and stay in touch with people who are important to them. But there’s also a downside to this constant access to technology, and that is:

When it affects the way they interact with patients: If you’re going to be fiddling with your phone while patients wait patiently to talk to you about their illness and discuss their symptoms with you, it’s not a gesture that’s going to endear you to them. You may think that you need to respond to the latest comment on your social network or catch up with the latest news from the world of medicine, but your patients may not look at it the same way. To them, you’re just being rude and seemingly uninterested in their problems.

When it distracts them from their work: If you’re in the middle of a patient examination and you stop to answer your mobile or refer to an iPhone or Blackberry app, you’re not making too much of an impression on or building trust in your patient. Doctors must use technology as a tool to augment their skills, not as the mainstay of their operations and processes. In general, if technology disrupts them from their work, it could prove to be dangerous.

When they’re not discreet in the way they use it: And last but not the least, if doctors store confidential patient records on their phone without taking the necessary precautions, it could lead to misuse of the information if it falls into the wrong hands.

The thing to remember about technology is that it is a double-edged sword – it hurts as much as it helps if you’re not careful about the way you use it.
